GhanaThink leads grassroot impact across Ghana for NVDay 2026

As Ghana observes National Volunteer Day (#NVDay2026), the GhanaThink Foundation, through its flagship Ghana Volunteer Program (GVP), proudly announces a series of community-led interventions, health outreaches, educational campaigns, and civic service projects across all sixteen regions of the nation.

Driven by a vibrant coalition of local regional chapters, partner non-governmental organizations, youth groups, and active citizens, this year’s observance highlights the transformative power of grassroots civic duty in tackling local challenges.

The September observance features a robust lineup of both successfully executed and upcoming service projects spanning urban centers and rural communities alike.

The underlying philosophy of this nationwide movement remains anchored in empowering individual citizens to take direct ownership of their community’s social and economic development without waiting for institutional intervention or external funding. Reflecting on the core vision and origin of the movement, Ato Ulzen-Appiah, Director of the GhanaThink Foundation, stated:

“The thinking at the beginning was to work on, celebrate, mobilize, encourage, organize the persons, who work on all sorts of activities, more than the activity. We wanted to build a culture where young people across Ghana realize that leadership begins with service, and that true progress happens when ordinary citizens take the initiative to solve problems right where they live.”

Over the weekend leading into National Volunteer Day, thousands of volunteers successfully mobilized across the country to execute high-impact community projects focusing on environmental sanitation, public healthcare support, and youth empowerment:

  • Sagnerigu Highway Cleanup (Northern Region): In alignment with World Cleanup Day, the Center for Opportunities and Rural Development (CORD Ghana), alongside NYCA Africa, YACES, and local youth groups, led a massive sanitation drive along the Shishegu Highways in the Sagnerigu Municipality. Operating under the theme “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” volunteers cleared choked drainage systems and educated local vendors on proper waste disposal.
  • “Pints of Hope” Nationwide Blood Drive: Rotaract District 9104, anchored by the Rotaract Club of Kumasi & Wa, spearheaded a critical multi-region voluntary blood donation campaign in Kumasi and Wa. Hundreds of units of blood were collected for regional health centers and the National Blood Service to help alleviate critical blood shortages.
  • Wa Mental Home Outreach (Upper West Region): The Youth Model Parliament and the Triple S Foundation collaborated to conduct comprehensive psychiatric health education, basic medical screenings, and the distribution of essential clothing, sanitary products, and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to residents and staff at the BAHASS Mental Home in Wa.
  • Coastal Beach & Marine Cleanups: Volunteers (including Thomas Adabogo, a member of Tema Konnect) conducted extensive plastic waste recovery exercises along Ananse Beach and neighboring coastal sites, retrieving hundreds of kilograms of abandoned fishing gear and single-use plastic.
  • Synchronized Regional Konnect Meetups: On Saturday evening, GhanaThink local teams hosted synchronized “Konnect Meetups” across twelve regional hubs—including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Kasoa, Sunyani, Tema, Cape Coast, Wa, Ho, Koforidua, and Takoradi. These gatherings served as networking and strategy hubs where volunteers shared past impact stories, built cross-sector partnerships, and organized immediate regional volunteer teams.

Upcoming & Ongoing Community Projects

The momentum of #NVDay2026 extends well beyond the official holiday, with several major interventions slated across the northern and southern belts in the coming days:

  • Chereponi Basic School Educational & Health Outreach (North East Region) on September 21: In the Chereponi District, the Chereponi Youth Connect team will visit local basic schools to conduct interactive health, personal hygiene, and civic education sessions. Volunteers will engage students on community peacebuilding, sanitation habits, and academic guidance, providing learning materials to under-resourced classrooms.
  • Free Medical Screening in Adenta (Greater Accra Region): The Rachaph 2026 initiative is holding a free health screening exercise at the Grace Mountain Holiness Arena in Adenta, providing free check-ups, diagnostic consultations, and basic medication to community members.
  • BAHASS Foundation Facility Support Visit (Upper West Region) on September 21: Following their regional meetup, the Barcamp Wa team is mobilizing resources to revisit the BAHASS Foundation facility to conduct a deep-cleaning exercise, prepare fresh meals (iced kenkey) for patients, and donate essential care supplies.
  • Free Virtual Hospitality & Grooming Training on September 21: From 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, hospitality professional Mister Fred is hosting an open-access virtual workshop on Google Meet. Designed to boost professional employability among youth, this pro-bono training focuses on corporate grooming, personal branding, workplace ethics, and high-standard customer service skills.
  • The Good Tree & Partners Environmental Action Programme (Greater Accra Region): Hosting an interactive climate and waste management workshop at The Good Tree Centre (TGT Centre) in Teshie on September 21, The Good Tree, Primad Organisation, and UNIYIA are teaming up to train young residents—especially young girls—in environmental responsibility, waste sorting, and recycling practices.
  • Bolgatanga Youth Sensitization & Digital Sanitation Campaign (Upper East Region) on September 25: Supported by GhanaThink and LOAD Ghana, the BolgaKonnect team will lead an intensive mental health and substance abuse intervention at the Bolgatanga Central Technical School. Concurrently, volunteers will launch a digital mapping campaign to identify and report public sanitation hazards to local authorities. Highlighting the project’s significance, Raymond Ayinne, Former Barcamp Resources Lead & a Bolga Konnect Admin, shared: “I am really excited that the BolgaKonnect team will be sensitizing young people about substance abuse to curb the ever-rising incidence of substance abuse in the Bolgatanga Municipality with support from the GhanaThink Foundation. By addressing mental health and addiction early, we give our youth a real chance to thrive.”
  • Lions District 418 Academic & Literacy Support Project (Ashanti Region): On September 25, the Kumasi Virtual Heritage Leo-Lions Club, Kumasi Adehyee Leo Club, and Kumasi Oasis Leo Club will gather at Ayeduase R/C School to support over 150 primary students. Volunteers will distribute vital academic stationery, school shoes, and financial aid to help keep young pupils in school and lighten the financial burden on low-income households.
  • GHANET & GOSANET Foundation HIV Prevention Campaign (Volta Region): The Ghana HIV/AIDS Network (GHANET) and GOSANET Foundation are executing a targeted public health outreach under the Other Vulnerable Populations (OVP) Project across the North and South Dayi Districts. Volunteers will distribute free HIV self-test kits, share reproductive health literature, and distribute protective contraceptives to support community-level disease prevention.
  • Tamale Offline Hangout Health & Safety Intervention (Northern Region) on October 3: The Tamale Offline Hangout group will execute a multi-faceted community outreach in Tamale, offering free public health screenings, fire safety and basic emergency response demonstrations, and a localized voluntary blood donation clinic in coordination with regional health officials.

GhanaThink emphasizes that active citizenship is not restricted to formal non-profit organizations or large-budget events. Through the #IMadeGhanaBetterToday (#IMGBT) movement, citizens are urged to make service a daily habit.

A prominent example is the #vimride free rides campaign, where car owners and everyday drivers offer free rides to commuters stranded at public transit stops during peak traffic hours. Elaborating on the philosophy of everyday kindness, Ato Ulzen-Appiah noted:

“In 2012, thanks to a conversation with #GhanaThink co-founder, fellow #Odadee & Google colleague Paa Kwesi Imbeah as well as our #GoogleGhana Chief Transport Officer Ali Bukari Maiga, we gave birth to the idea of #IMadeGhanaBetterToday aka #IMGBT.

“Ali & I started giving out free rides while riding in #Accra to folks who were at bus stop looking for (public & private bus & taxi, etc) transport. I started doing this on my own in the #vimride years after. In the last 3 years, I have been giving so many free rides that I pretty much lose count.

“In urban areas like Accra, Kumasi, etc, we have a public transport crisis. There are too many folks at bus stops waiting for trotros etc that don’t come, do not stop or are creating unfavorable dispensations. We need to contribute more to the solutions. As part of National Volunteer Day, I have been and would be giving out lots of free rides,

“As part of #NVDay20026, I am encouraging us all who have cars to join in, and help give out more free rides. Let’s continue to do so throughout September and past this period as well. These are acts of kindnesss that have untold benefits,” said Ulzen-Appiah.

The GhanaThink Foundation invites all Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora to step up, take action in their immediate surroundings, and share their stories on social media using the hashtags #NVDay2026, #volunteeringh, #IMadeGhanaBetterToday, and #GhanaThink to inspire others.
