Nigeria: Hundreds of pupils missing after gun attack

Hundreds of Nigerian students are reported missing after gunmen attacked their Government Science Secondary School.

Over 800 students were in the school when the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and started shooting indiscriminately in the north western part of Nigeria.

The Nigerian military has announced that it had exchanged fire with the gunmen after locating their hideout in a forest.

There are however no reports of students being injured.

Meanwhile, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari who condemned the attack has ordered the school to carry out a full audit of students to find out how many are missing.

Parents who dashed to the school to take their children home were also asked to notify the school authorities.

In a statement the Nigerian police said that during the exchange of fire, some of the gunmen were forced to retreat. Students were able to scale the fence of the school and run to safety.

About 200 students who fled after the attack have reportedly returned to the school.
