Staff detained over Davido’s son drowning in home pool

Nigerian Afrobeat star Davido and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, a popular chef and influencer, have suffered the demise of their only child together, Ifeanyi Adeleke in a pool accident.

The news began as a rumour on social media with alleged speculations but was later confirmed by the Nigerian Police.

It was reported that the three-year-old drowned in the family’s pool in Banana Island area, Lagos State on Monday, October 31, and was submerged for an undisclosed amount of time before being discovered.

According to local reports, the boy was supposedly taken by ambulance to a hospital, where his demise was confirmed, becoming the most discussed incident in Nigeria’s social space.

Celebrities and followers of the artist however, are reacting to the boy’s passing with shock and astonishment, gaining global traction in a short time.

Many have shared the awful news on social media and offered the bereaved family a heartfelt sympathy.

Police interrogation

Eight staff were invited for questioning, and anyone with a case to answer would be arrested, according to the Nigerian police.

In a publication by BBC, one of the couple’s domestic staff called the police on Monday at 22:00 local time, according to police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin.

“We are reviewing the CCTV cameras to get additional information about the circumstances of his death,” Mr Hundeyin told BBC following the incident.

Six freed, two detained

An article by local newspaper punchng indicated the possibility of an autopsy to confirm if the boy truly died from drowning in the pool, in what has been publicly declared as caregivers’ negligence.

It was reported that the nanny was negligent of the boy’s movement around the house, till he had drowned in the pool behind the house.

As a result, all the domestic staff at home at the time of the incident have been questioned by the police but only the nanny and cook were detained. This was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
