Ugo Ugochukwu makes history as 2026 FIA Formula 3 champion
Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made history after becoming the first American driver in history to win the modern FIA Formula 3 Championship in the final race of the season in Madrid, Spain.
The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver entered Sunday’s decisive Feature Race level on points with British rival Freddie Slater following a closely contested season.
Finland’s Tuukka Taponen won the race at the newly built Madring circuit, but Ugochukwu’s runner-up finish was enough to secure the championship. Slater finished eighth, leaving Ugochukwu 14 points clear at the top of the final standings.
The title completed a remarkable turnaround for Ugochukwu, who had trailed Slater by 15 points heading into the final weekend. A strong qualifying performance put him in position to fight for the championship, and he delivered when it mattered most.
Born in New York to Nigerian parents, Ugochukwu has risen through the junior single-seater ranks with ambitions of reaching Formula 1. He previously competed as part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme before joining Campos Racing for the 2026 FIA Formula 3 campaign.
He made an immediate impact this season, taking his maiden Formula 3 victory in the Melbourne Feature Race in March. He later added another win at Silverstone and consistently remained among the leading drivers throughout the campaign.
The championship battle with Slater intensified during the middle stages of the season. Slater moved eight points clear after winning the Budapest Feature Race in July, leaving Ugochukwu to close the gap during the second half of the campaign.
By the time the championship reached Madrid, the two drivers were once again level on points, setting up a winner-takes-all-style finale.
Ugochukwu kept his race clean and avoided unnecessary risks, staying in second place behind Taponen as Slater fought further down the field. A late Safety Car produced a final-lap sprint, but Ugochukwu held his position to cross the line second and claim the title.
His championship makes him the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship, adding his name to a list of former champions that includes Formula 1 drivers such as Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.
The achievement also marks the biggest success so far in Ugochukwu’s young career. At 19, the Nigerian-American driver has now established himself as an FIA Formula 3 champion and taken another significant step through the junior single-seater pathway toward Formula 2 and Formula 1.
