History in the Making: KNUST & VSU to seal historic partnership

TheAfricanDream Consultancy, a Washington-DC-based Africa Affairs information and communication research consultancy, can confirm a landmark trans-Atlantic alliance is coming into being on August 27, 2026. It involves Ghana’s premier science and technology institution, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Virginia State University (VSU), one of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities, founded in1882.

The two prestigious educational institutions will officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the Washington-DC metro area this year at an exclusive ceremony, set against the powerful imagery of the Ghana and U.S. flags and the towering spiritual presence of their respective founding fathers and mothers when VSU and KNUST, unites African tradition and American academia.

At VSU, the partnership is supported through the Division of Global Leadership and Talent Development and the Dr. George H. Bennett Office for International Education (OIE), which advances the University’s international education, study abroad, global partnerships, and cross-cultural learning initiatives.

“This partnership is about far more than the signing of an agreement. It represents the intentional creation of pathways between Africa and the African diaspora, pathways through which our students, faculty, and institutions can exchange knowledge, pursue collaborative research, and engage the world with purpose,” said Dr. Lisa M. Hopson, Executive Director for the Division of Global Leadership and Talent Development at VSU, to TheAfricanDream Consultancy in a pre-event interview.

“For Virginia State University, our relationship with KNUST reflects our commitment to ensuring that global education is not peripheral, but essential to preparing the next generation of global leaders. What we establish today will shape opportunities and scholarship for generations to come, proving once again that Greater Happens Here.,” she added.

What to Expect from the MOU:

Based on prior engagements led by VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah and KNUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, the partnership will focus on:

• Student & Faculty Exchange
• Data Science, Agriculture & Artificial Intelligence
• Joint Research & Global Learning via VSU’s Global Partnerships for Teaching and Learning – Dr. George H. Bennett Office for International Education

This follows KNUST’s push to expand global partnerships and train international professionals. Also speaking about the pending event scheduled to happen on August 27th at an undisclosed location, Daniel M. Roberts, Founding Dean & Senior International Officer, Virginia State University, mentioned:
