Abankese Music Festival to debut in Cape Coast, Ghana

Abankese Music Festival will launch its debut festival from 26th – 27th, December as an annual event of music, arts and culture in the beautiful, historical city of Cape Coast, Ghana.

The festival will place an emphasis on showcasing Ghanaian heritage to attendees and the world.

“We are envisioning a gateway to uniting our people here at home and the Diaspora,” said Cuthbert Mensah (Kay Tee) the event’s curator, to TheAfricanDream.net in a phone interview.

“Because if we must find solace in each other as Africans, we must unite to celebrate in freedom and in love,” he added.

According to the organisers, the festival will be held in Cape Coast because it is one of Ghana’s most historic cities. It houses the Elmina castle, a prominent historical landmark in the region, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region is also bordered to the south by the Gulf of Guinea, “it would be splendid for pre or post festival tourism plans, especially for diasporans who haven’t been to the region before,” said Cuthbert to TheAfricanDream.net

“We also believe that castles in Africa are stigmatized by the negative effects of slave trade. So we’re picturing that ‘ABANKESE’ which means ‘Castle’ in Akan language, Ghana will be the music festival that will shine a new light on the beautiful castles that Ghana has to offer,” he added.

The event also aims to improve a central part of the nation by engaging in socioeconomic initiatives that will benefit the local youth.

“We will launch ‘CITY OF HOPE’ – a charitable branch of the Abankese Music Festival that will annually select three brilliant children from three schools and sponsor their fees for a year,” said Cuthbert.

Additionally, City of Hope wants to establish a music and art school for young people in partnership with Cape Coast, Elmina, and other adjacent communities in the central region.

The festival will be hosted by Hyperman Kelly Black, and MCs include Don Staggard & Dr Spice. Three DJs will jockey at the event – Dj Skynet, Dj Mickay, Dj Pizil.

Performing at the event will be artistes like: Wanlov (The Kubulor), Skrewfaze, Kojo Vypa, Lil Sherif, Saa Boy No, Don Prophecy and Akatakye. Also on the bill are Roy X Taylor, Boggy Wenzday, Revlaytion, Tallybo, Qweci, Ded Buddy, Ama, Nova, Minab, Kiddian Lyrical, and Slim B.
