South African Don Dada releases 2nd double album, The Struggle & The Crown
Multi-Platinum, Multi-Award-Winning South African Reggae / Hip-Hop artist, Menelik Nesta Gibbons, affectionately known around the world as Don Dada, returns with his most ambitious musical offering to date, The Struggle & The Crown.
Released by Ruff Cutt Studio CC and distributed worldwide by Tuff Gong International, The Struggle & The Crown is another powerful double album from the Recording Academy Voting Member, following the critical success of The Heart & The Mind, a project that cemented Don Dada’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading voices in conscious music.
Like its predecessor, The Struggle & The Crown is presented as two complementary albums, one predominantly Roots Reggae and the other Hip-Hop, each speaking to opposite realities while ultimately arriving at the same destination.
“Every crown carries responsibility. Every struggle carries purpose. Without struggle there is no crown, and without purpose there is no legacy” said Don Dada.
The album explores the beautiful contradiction that has shaped generations of Africans throughout history. Every victory has required sacrifice. Every achievement has demanded resilience. Talking in the language of The Crown, the Reggae album embraces authentic Roots Reggae while naturally incorporating Afrobeat, Dancehall and contemporary African influences. Rich melodies, powerful storytelling and uplifting rhythms showcase Don Dada’s unmistakable voice while exploring themes of peace, healing, spirituality, African identity and global unity.
The Hip-Hop album speaks in the language of The Struggle, blending Hip-Hop with Kwaito, Amapiano and modern African production to confront issues of inequality, identity, perseverance and social justice. It is bold, uncompromising and deeply personal while remaining unmistakably African in both sound and perspective.
“Together, the two albums complete one another. One celebrates where we come from. The other reminds us what we have overcome,” said Don Dada.
In line with Don Dada vision to empower grow Africa’s finest, production on The Struggle & The Crown was entrusted to one of South Africa’s most versatile and innovative producers, Sabelo “Take Over” Maphalala, whose exceptional ability to blend Afrobeat, Hip-Hop, Kwaito, Amapiano, Reggae, Ragga and Dancehall has helped shape a truly contemporary African sound without losing sight of reggae’s rich traditions.
Working alongside him is Don Dada’s long-standing senior creative partner Leroy Scarlett of the internationally respected Reggae Powerhouse Band, whose musical direction continues strengthening the artistic bridge between Africa and Jamaica while preserving the authenticity that has become synonymous with Don Dada’s music.
Finally, South African award winning SuperProducerRapz who has been instrumental in shaping thecreative identity and is a constant on Don Dada’s works.
Overseeing the entire project was RuFF CuTT Studios RasMoe together with South African multidisciplinary creative, music business specialist, Axolile Lucky Mke, professionally known as Sbali or NowIam. The Crown.
The album artwork once again bears the unmistakable signature of acclaimed South African portrait and mixed-media artist Ras Silas, whose previous collaboration on The Heart & The Mind established a striking visual identity for Don Dada’s music.
For The Struggle & The Crown, Ras Silas presents another powerful visual narrative that mirrors the album’s central philosophy—royalty forged through resilience, dignity refined through struggle and hope emerging from adversity.
