Black Fredericksburg Radio adds Dr. Paula Royster as host
Black Fredericksburg Radio (BFR) has announced the addition of Dr. Paula Royster to its lineup of community voices as the new host of its “Did You Know?” historical vignettes.
A scholar, genealogist, author and local historian, Royster will deliver short segments highlighting lesser-known aspects of Black history, with particular attention to Fredericksburg and the surrounding PD16 region. The segments will explore people, places and contributions that have often received limited attention in mainstream historical accounts.
Royster is the founder and CEO of The Center for African American Genealogical Research, Inc. (CAAGRI) and a two-time Fulbright Scholar. Her work focuses on the history and culture of the African diaspora, with research spanning Africa, North and South America, Europe and the Caribbean.
She previously served as an adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg and as a faculty member at Southern New Hampshire University.
She is also the author of A Different Story: A Black History of Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania, Virginia and I.AM.ARAPI: The Journey of Akan Israelites in the Islamic Slave Trade.
BFR is currently a nonprofit, community-focused, internet radio platform dedicated to amplifying Black voices, history, culture, education and inspiration in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and beyond.
The station said Royster’s segments will bring attention to stories, people, places and contributions that have often been overlooked but remain important to the region’s history.
According to the platform, its hosts and contributors volunteer their time, voices and expertise, producing pre-recorded educational and inspirational programming that is woven between music throughout the day.
The format is designed to keep local voices, education and Black-centered information at the heart of the station’s programming. Royster joins a lineup of community-focused features that includes:
- The Inner CEO with Coach T
- Fuel for the Soul with Dr. Curtis E. Edmonds Jr.
- Before the Crisis with financial strategist Wonda Grayson
- Talk With The Family with Andi Jax
- Coach B’s Sports Scene with Coach B
Her addition expands BFR’s programming around Black history and the preservation of local heritage in Fredericksburg, where Black communities have deep historical roots dating to the colonial era.
BFR says its current internet-radio model is part of a broader plan to establish a full-time, live terrestrial Black radio station serving the Fredericksburg community.
The organization operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and says listeners, supporters, donors and community partners are helping advance that goal. Listeners can access Black Fredericksburg Radio at www.blkfxbgradio.com.
