That July 2026 Night We Told The Truth About Investing in Ghana
When I walked into Cello Restaurant & Bar on the night of Saturday, July 25, 2026, for the Global Diaspora Day Accra official panel discussion, I expected another investment talk with PowerPoints, big numbers, and polished pitches that make Ghana sound easy. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case.
What we got instead was the naked truth.
Themed “The Truth About Investing in Ghana: Beyond The Headlines – Opportunities, Risks & Real Returns,” it was not a sales pitch, but a masterclass in honesty. And that’s exactly what the diaspora has been starving for.
I pulled out my Samsung smartphone, and despite the lack of a camera flash and tripod, I still dared to record for a little over an hour of what I witnessed. Cello was packed.
We had returnees who moved 10 years ago, first-timers who landed 10 days ago, Ghanaians who never left, diasporans from the US, UK, Canada, and the Caribbean, all under one roof. The energy was different: no posturing, just people who genuinely want to get it right on the continent.
Speakers Who Spoke From The Heart
What made this panel special was how candid everyone was. No fluff.
Featured panelist Ivy Prosper, Founder of Prosper Creative Group, was phenomenal as always. Ivy didn’t give us motivational quotes; she gave us lived experience, gems about building a creative business in Accra that actually lasts, about navigating systems, about betting on relationships over transactions, and about why patience is not just a virtue in Ghana; it’s a business strategy.
When Ivy speaks, you feel she is protecting you from the mistakes she had to learn the hard way, and I was glad I made it a point to attend the event a little earlier just to be blessed with my precious one-on-one chat with her before the real deal began.
Ms. Prosper’s tone was the tone also shared by the entire panel for the whole night. The speakers dropped jems all evening and each panel member, audience contributions and asked questions without any dount provided excellent lessons and insights. What I learned, in a Quick Summary
a) Do your due diligence twice: don’t invest from emotion because you miss home.
b) Your network is your real capital: find your trustworthy local feet on the ground before you send your money.
c) Small wins are still wins: the diaspora wants to build a 20-bedroom complex on day one, but the real returns are in starting small, learning the terrain, and scaling.
d) Risk is real, but so is opportunity: they didn’t sugarcoat land issues, bureaucracy, or FX challenges. But they balanced it with the other side – a 30+ million person market, a creative economy exploding, and the power of being early and knowing how to tell your story.
In short, it was absolutely business advice, but yet it felt like family advice.
The Audience Made It Beautiful Too
For me, one of the best part was the Q&A and audience participation. This wasn’t an audience just clapping. People candidly shared real stories. No question was dismissed. The panel answered as much and as best as they could with empathy and practical steps. You could see people nodding, chattering, exchanging numbers and it was so great to be part of the positive energy.
That beautiful back-and-forth turned a panel into a community indeed. This is what Global Diaspora Day Accra got right: it created a safe space for the conversations we usually only have in WhatsApp or online groups; it killed the whispers by freeing the mind, allowing thoughts to be safely expressed.
