Inside AJ DaHottest’s career in Ghana’s entertainment scene
AJ DaHottest, born Augustine Odortey Akrong and also affectionately known as Augustine Jebor, is a Ghanaian-Liberian rapper, singer-songwriter, DJ, and radio personality with YFM Ghana, widely known for fusing Afropop and hip hop into an energetic sound that defines both his music and on-air presence.
Originally from Liberia, he was raised in Ghana after relocating at a young age, and has since developed into a multifaceted entertainer, earning recognition for his dynamic work in music as well as his engaging voice on the radio.
AJ DaHottest grew up immersed in music and drew early inspiration from global hip hop icons such as Tupac Shakur, a major influence on his sound. His passion for music led him to the radio industry in the mid-2000s, starting at Luv 99.5 FM in Kumasi between 2005 and 2006, where he hosted programs such as Drive Time and Weekend City Jam.
His engaging personality and strong connection with listeners set him apart, earning him a move to Hitz 103.7 FM in Accra in 2006. Over the next several years, he became a familiar voice on the station, hosting shows including Weekend Lockdown, Cruise Control, and Daybreak Hitz. Through his efforts, he successfully built a reputation as a reliable broadcaster.
October 2020 marked a significant turning point for him after joining Y 107.9 FM in Accra under the guidance of industry veteran Eddie Blay Jr. AJ DaHottest reintroduced himself to audiences with renewed energy and perspective.
He began hosting The A.M. LockDown, a late-night weekend show that airs from midnight to 3 a.m. and broadcasts live from the Accra Mall while also reaching a global audience through online streaming. The show stands out for its interactive format and diverse musical selection, blending R&B, hip hop, Afropop, reggae, dancehall, and nostalgic hits from the 1990s and early 2000s.
Through listener engagement and creative segments, AJ DaHottest transformed the program, giving a participatory experience for his audience. He also contributed to other programs on the station, including Lift Off and Party Pressure Max.
Alongside his broadcasting career, AJ DaHottest has consistently pursued music, developing a sound that fuses Afropop with hip hop and hiplife elements. His breakthrough came with the release of “Tsieyoo Meni Yaanor” in 2015, an upbeat track that gained significant online attention and helped establish his presence in Ghana’s music industry.
Over the years, he has released several songs including “You & I,” “Benkemormi,” “Wake Up,” “Stay In Your Lane,” and “Pressure,” featuring C Craff in 2022. His music often carries themes of motivation and perseverance, reflecting his personal journey and outlook on life.
In his role as a radio personality, AJ conducted interviews with a wide range of notable figures in African entertainment, including DKB Ghana, Kwaw Kese, Sarkodie, Edem, Wanlov the Kubolor, D’banj, Ramsey Nouah, and Suran.
