Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa among United Airlines’ new nonstop destinations to Africa — Yaaay!
During the first week of September 2020, United Airlines of the United States (US) announced to the delight of flyers on the Washington DC–Accra Ghana return route plans to expand its global route network with their new nonstop service for those routes.
Besides this new DC-Accra route, United will be offering more nonstop service to South Africa as well, making Africans like myself as well as non-Africans who travel from the US to these countries for business, pleasure, or personal reasons even more excited.
The new Washington-DC — Accra-Ghana flights will commence later on in the spring of 2021 and will be followed by a Lagos-Nigeria route. TheAfricanDream.net is super excited about these routes guys, and we hope you are too…
We hope and pray that all respective governments involved in pulling this off, both the US and the above mentioned African countries work together on making these non-stop routes run smoothly. Knowing how crazy 2020 has been, all I can do is to pray this one works well amidst COVID-19.
According to information available to TheAfricanDream.net and confirmed by Iuliia Tore, United will become the only U.S. carrier serving Accra nonstop from Washington, D.C., and the only airline to serve Lagos nonstop from Washington, D.C., with three weekly flights to each destination beginning in late spring of 2021.
Bearing in mind that Washington metropolitan area has the second-largest population of Ghanaians in the US, and Lagos being the largest Western African destination from the United States, this will make United — like they will say in Lagos or Accra — ‘plentay monnie to chop for yankee’.
According to Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network and Alliances in a conversation with IuliiaTore: “These new nonstop routes provide shorter travel times and convenient one-stop connections from across the United States, demonstrating United’s continued innovative and forward-looking approach to rebuilding our network to meet the travel needs of our customers.”
United already provides seasonal, three-times-weekly service between Newark/New York and Cape Town, South Africa. By adding new daily nonstop flights between Newark/New York and Johannesburg in spring 2021, the airline will operate more flights to South Africa than any other U.S. carrier.
I pray South African Airways will soon put its house together and bounce back since I miss flying them nonstop from DC to Accra and back. Speaking of Accra, will Ghana give me a national airline, pretty please?
Anyway, these African countries are not the only ones with exciting news on the United Airlines long haul routes, the carrier also announced this September that their other cool nonstop service routes will include India and the US archipelago of Hawaii. For more details visit www.united.com/en/us.
