Parables Studios, an animation studio based in Accra, Ghana, has launched its online subscription-based streaming service, ‘KOLIKO+’ which is destined to change the way we search for and watch home-made animated contents suitable for the whole family.
The art of animation finding its way into the fabric of the African creative community has created a lot of groundbreaking animated contents. Such contents are seen sprouting seamlessly from every part of the continent, some even attracting global attention.
With a well developed culture of promoting, maintaining and documenting rich Ghanaian traditions, KOLIKO+ is designed to be a repository of the very best in African animation and graphic novels that represents the African narrative. TheAfricanDream.net discovered that this repository will include amazing in-house productions from Ghana as well as external works from across the continent.
When TheAfricanDream.net spoke to the director of the studio, Cycil Jones Abban, the inspiration behind this initiative, he disclosed that the recent lockdown restrictions that were imposed amidst COVID-19 really sparked of a lot of his ideas for this new creation; “Parents were desperate to find ways of engaging and entertaining their children to save them from the boredom and frustration that came with being severed from the activities they had been used to all their lives,” he said.
“They however came to the harsh realization that, the overwhelming majority of child-friendly materials online were foreign and didn’t speak to the kind of contents they were searching for. That was what made me decide to create this online one-stop-shop to house wholesome entertainment for kids, paying particular attention to needs of the African child, who I believe needs to be fairly represented,” he continued, with the confidence of a man who is set to bring about a well calculated change to affect the lives of many in a country he dearly loves and believes in.
Cycil also went on to indicate that the roll out of this plan will be in phases and that Ghanaians and the rest of Africa should brace themselves for what is to come. There are plans afoot for collaborative work with animators across Africa to produce more globally attractive content (some of which will be at studioparables.com) to lure in interests of even non-Africans too.
As an additional feature, Koliko+ will serve as a platform for the latest trends and news in the Ghanaian animation industry and a catalogue of and for professional animation studios in the country. In its efforts to promote animation and the great creative minds behind some of the outstanding animation works in the country, the platform will throw a spotlight on some of the great talents the country has to offer, itself having enjoyed the spotlight with interviews on the British Broadcasting Corporation and the Voice of America global news portals.
The streaming platform requires subscription to join its ever growing community which entitles subscribers to unlimited access to a video library where they will be able to watch what they want and when they want to wherever. TheAfricanDream.net got an exclusive access to view some of these cool contents and can guarantee that this is going to be a super-exciting experience for lovers of animation and Africa’s story worldwide.
With a mission to organise top-of-the-funnel animation films, thought provoking Indie films and comic books, KOLIKO+ will undoubtedly be a trialblazer that will be producing and creating locally, high quality works available not only to Africans, but to a global audience.
With its catchy slogan; “Best in African contents in one click,” KOLIKO+ which is endorsed by TheAfricanDream.net is set to become a household name across Africa soon.
