ELECTIONS 2024: Elections by the people, of the people, & for the people – Nii Amu

If (Ghana’s) elections come off, and God willing I contest, I will win. You may take this to the bank.

NDC and NPP like Goliath, will come to you in the name of money and deceit, but like David, I’ll come to you in the name of wisdom and truth, the pillars of successful nationhood which the Siamese twins have defied.

Never forget the wise saying:

“Wisdom is a defence as money is a defence, but the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it”

– Ecclesiastes 7:12

You haven’t seen any wisdom from NDC and NPP, have you? So, they’ve decided to monetize politics – the result is death of our nation. Wisdom gives life, money doesn’t.

The fundamental questions for 2024 are only 2.

  1. Has the constitution served your interest? In fact, does the constitution have the capacity to serve your interest?
  2. Have NDC and NPP used the constitution to serve your interest? In fact, do they have the capacity to employ the constitution to serve your interest?

You got to answer these questions honestly, and decide what you need to do. It’s your call, not mine. Let me help you with the core stuff the constitution and your governments are supposed to do for you.

PREAMBLE TO THE 1992 CONSTITUTION

IN THE NAME OF THE ALMIGHTY GOD, we the People of Ghana,

IN EXERCISE of our natural and inalienable right to establish a framework of government which shall secure for ourselves and posterity the blessings of liberty, equality of opportunity and prosperity;

The core principle of this constitution is to establish A FRAMEWORK OF GOVERNMENT that will serve as a GUARANTOR for NOW and the FUTURE, three key guarantees:

  1. Blessings of liberty
  2. Equality of opportunity
  3. Prosperity

Let me deal with just #3

In July 2004, 56% of our total debt outstanding was forgiven through the HIPC program. By 2006, our debt to GDP was 26.2%, this rose to 32% by the end of 2008. Mills/Mahama took over in January 2009 and pushed the figure to 57% by the end of 2016.

Akufo-Addo/Bawunia took over in January 2017, and according to budget 2022, our debt to GDP by September 2021 was 78%. The IMF has projected it’ll be 81.5% next year. At this rate, it’ll be at least 90% by the end of 2024. That’s the likely condition under which the elections will be held. Ebɛ easy!

Clearly, the constitution doesn’t have the framework of government to make good its guaranteed prosperity for ourselves and posterity. The framework therein has secured unpayable debts for ourselves and posterity. This constitution has no moral or legal rights to exist. It must go.

The institutionalized, rotational, kleptocratic governments of NDC and NPP lack the integrity and competence to make good a very flawed constitution. They must go and never come back again.

2024 will not be about a 3rd force vs NDC/NPP. So, what will it be about? Many things.

  1. The New (constitution) vs the Old (constitution)
  2. The 5th Republic vs the 4th Republic
  3. The Fair State vs the Failed State
  4. The Best vs the Worst
  5. The Wise vs the “Wealthy”

The preamble continues:

The principle that all powers of Government spring from the sovereign will of the People;

I can say all I want, but it’s only you the people who can bring the change that you want and deserve. Let 2024 be your election.

The preamble concludes:

We the people of Ghana, DO HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

We own the constitution. It’s our slave to work for us, and not our master that we must worship. It has proven beyond all reasonable doubt that it doesn’t have what it takes to deliver its goods. Like salt, it’s lost its salinity and therefore it has to be thrown away and trampled upon by men.

Let me finish the economics of politics in Ghana with this narrative:

At independence in 1957, we had no debt. At the end of 1965, our debt to GDP was 25%. 10 years later at the end of 1975, Kutu had brought the debt down to 16% of GDP. What did the drug-induced psychotics do to my friend Kutu? They brutally terminated the physical life of debt-free Kutu. Isn’t it fair to brutally terminate the political life of debt-laden Mahama and Bawumia? It’s your call.

Now, the mathematics of the politics:

Before the 2020 elections, the political science dept of the University of Ghana brought out a survey report with very interesting figures. I criticized the study for its lack of depth, but the gross figures are enough for this discussion.

Only 56% of Ghanaians were solidly behind NDC & NPP. 9.9% have some sympathy for them. 34.1% no allegiance. This study creates a hiatus for the New Force. Even at that time, at least a 3rd of the electorate could have been mopped up by a new force with the correct leadership and message.

Brothers and sisters, there’s time for everything. If another census were to be done today, the no allegiance column may be up to 45%. If the study is correct and with the abysmal performance of this NPP government, NPP may return to its core Adu Boahen vote of 30%. The signs are good, aren’t they? But don’t be complacent.

Let 2024 be your election: by the people, of the people, and for the people.

Tswa omanye aba,

Nii Amu Darko
