Ghana Embassy D.C. reports online service disruption, E-Visa active

The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in Washington, D.C. has issued a public notice informing the general public of a temporary disruption of its online services due to technical challenges affecting its online systems for about a week now.

According to the notice seen by TheAfricanDream.co, the Embassy’s website is currently unavailable, resulting in disruptions to certain consular services provided by the Mission.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in Washington D.C. wishes to inform the general public that it is currently experiencing technical challenges affecting its online systems. Consequently, the Embassy’s website is temporarily unavailable,” the notice stated.

However, the Embassy says people who require urgent travel to Ghana due to an emergency should apply through the official Ghana E-Visa platform, which remains operational at https://evisa.immigration.gov.gh/

This is the same platform launched by the Government of Ghana on May 25, 2026, which now issues decisions within 48 hours for tourist and business visas and has waived visa fees for African passport holders.

The Embassy has apologised for any inconvenience and assured that efforts are being made to restore services as soon as possible. It also thanked the public for its patience and cooperation.

“The issue affects most Ghana Missions globally that require online application submission and could probably be as a result of a revamping of the visa/passport application portals to ensure a more secure and smooth process. There are some missions unaffected probably because they have low traffic or they only do paper and in-person submissions like Russia and Zimbabwe etc…” said an anonymous source familiar with the issue to TheAfricanDream.co.

The public is therefore advised to rely only on verified channels:

  • Website: washington.mfa.gov.gh
  • E-Visa: evisa.immigration.gov.gh
  • Facebook: Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC, USA

This is not the first disruption. In May 2025, the Washington mission was temporarily shut down after an audit uncovered a 5-year visa fee fraud scheme involving a local IT staff who created an unauthorized link redirecting applicants to a private company, Ghana Travel Consultants, and charging unapproved fees of $29.75 to $60.

Following that incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recalled staff, dissolved the IT department, and migrated the Embassy to a new official website: washington.mfa.gov.gh, warning that the old domain ghanaembassydc.org is no longer in use and should be disregarded.

TheAfricanDream.co will provide updates as soon as the Embassy restores its online systems.
