Africa arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with unprecedented representation, sending a record 10 nations to football’s biggest stage. While the tournament is still in its early days, the continent has already produced moments of drama, resilience and belief, showing that African teams are ready to challenge some of the world’s traditional football powers.
Leading the way are Ghana and Ivory Coast, securing sterling victories. Ghana delivered one of the tournament’s most dramatic finishes when the Black Stars edged Panama 1- 0 thanks to a late winner that sparked celebrations among fans back home and across the continent. The victory strengthened Ghana’s hopes of advancing from Group L and demonstrated the determination that has long characterized the four-time African champions.
Ivory Coast also made an impressive start, defeating Ecuador 1- 0 in a disciplined performance that highlighted the balance between defensive organization and attacking efficiency. The result gave the Elephants a crucial three points and positioned them favourably ahead of a challenging clash with Germany.
Morocco continued to prove why they are regarded as one of the most dangerous teams outside football’s traditional elite. The Atlas Lions earned a deserved 1-1 draw against Brazil, frustrating the five-time world champions with a confident display. The result further reinforced the reputation Morocco built during its historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup and suggested another deep tournament run may be possible.
Egypt also opened its campaign positively, securing a valuable 1-1 draw against Belgium. The Pharaohs showed discipline and composure throughout the contest, earning a point against one of Europe’s strongest sides. DR Congo joined Egypt among Africa’s unbeaten teams after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in a result that ranks among the continent’s most significant achievements of the tournament so far. Competing at their first World Cup in decades, the Congolese side demonstrated remarkable determination against a team packed with international experience.

Cape Verde added another positive result for Africa by holding Spain to a scoreless draw. Facing one of the tournament favorites, the island nation produced a resilient defensive performance to secure a point that could prove decisive in the battle for qualification.
Not every African nation enjoyed a positive opening result. Senegal suffered a 3-1 defeat to France despite showing flashes of quality, while Tunisia endured a difficult outing in a 5-1 loss to Sweden. Algeria was beaten 3-0 by Argentina and South Africa fell 2-0 to hosts Mexico in its opening fixture.
Despite those setbacks, Africa’s overall performance has offered plenty of encouragement. The continent’s representatives have not only collected valuable points but have also shown they can compete on equal terms with some of the world’s most established football nations.
After the opening round of matches, Africa has recorded two victories, four draws and four defeats. More importantly, several teams remain firmly in contention for places in the knockout stages. With crucial group matches still to come, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Egypt, DR Congo and Cape Verde have all given their supporters reason to dream.
For a continent enjoying its largest-ever presence at the World Cup, the journey is just beginning. If the opening matches are any indication, Africa could be on course for one of its strongest World Cup campaigns yet.
