Yohane Ashitey to Make Ghana’s Port City of Tema “Shine Again”
In 2021, Mr. Yohane Amarh Ashitey promised to revitalise Tema’s growth as part of the “Make Tema Shine Again” campaign, which will address by-law enforcement, foster a business-friendly climate, and establish collaborations with diverse stakeholders.
In an effort to uphold the pledge, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) has requested support for, and participation in a number of development projects to increase trading activity in Tema region of Ghana, one of Africa’s vibrant port cities.
Mr. Ashitey reinstated his pledge in an appeal for support in September of 2022, from corporate organisations during the inaugural Mayors Ball in Tema. He claimed that with their help, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) will be able to create platforms and opportunities for businesses to flourish as well as form alliances with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for Tema’s residents.
He assumed office in 2021 after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana nominated him for the position, and the Assembly also confirmed him with 97% of the vote.
In Mr. Ashitey’s first public address, he promised that the “Make Tema shine again” campaign will “wage war on the indiscipline to the Assembly’s by-laws on sanitation.” He made this promise at the TMA’s ordinary assembly meeting.
“War on unauthorized traders along the streets and pavements, unauthorized structures, dwindling performance of candidates in education, among others,” are some of the issued he wants to address added.

His September’s call-for-support speech is a reflection of these promises.
He pointed out that other assembly are fortunate to be blessed with income-generating resources such as gold, lumber, bauxite, cocoa, etc., whereas Tema municipality although blessed with industries, is crippled by developmental deficiencies such as substandard roads, education, health, sanitation, sports, and tourism infrastructure.
Tema however houses reputable companies such as Tropical Cables, Tex Style Ghana Limited, Wilmar Ghana, Chemico Limited etc.
Mr. Ashitey has more than ten years experience working in front-line politics and has held a number of positions in the Tema East Constituency, including Elections Coordinator and Technical Advisor.
He is a University of East London graduate and a telecom engineer. The MCE is also a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He attended Presbyterian Boys Senior High School in Legon, Ghana, and was a former instructor at Cavendish College in the United Kingdom.
Tema is a city on the Bight of Benin and Atlantic coast of Ghana. It is located 25 kilometers (16 mi) east of the capital city; Accra, in the region of Greater Accra, and is the capital of the Tema Metropolitan District. As of 2013, Tema is the eleventh most populous settlement in Ghana.
