When Barcelona plays Real Madrid, although really the competition is between the two teams, there is always an underlying subplot – Messi versus Ronaldo. In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo was one of the most expensive players to date, having been signed for $131 million. Messi has a release clause of $400 million, making them two highest paid soccer players in the world. Both players have won the Player of the Year award and both have scored in a Champions League Final. So how can you compare two such amazing players? Let’s take a look at some of their defining features:

Control – when it comes to controlling, Messi takes the hot spot. There is arguably no one better in the world at taking on players, dribbling and controlling the ball the whole way. It is true to say that he has technique, balance and quick footwork. Ronald also has good control, but as a very fast player, he sometimes relies on this a little too much rather than his footwork.

Finishes  Messi is very good when it comes to one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and is known for an effortless curl into the corner of the goal. It is true that he misses a few, but there is very little to fault when it comes to Messi’s goal-scoring capabilities. As a bigger lad, Ronaldo sometimes relies on his power and strength to score goals, and the record number of goals that he has scored over the years speak for themselves.

Teamwork – Messi works very well with his teammates and will always find some way out of a sticky situation by working flawlessly with them. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has been accused of trying too hard on his own rather than thinking of the team as a whole. For example, he will often try and score even if there is someone in a better position to do so so that he can claim the glory for the shot. Understandably everyone wants to be the best goal scorer, however not when it puts the rest of the team at risk.

Build – As sporting stars, Messi and Ronaldo have to be very physically fit in order to do what they do. Messi has a fairly small build, however, and this means that he can sometimes be knocked off the ball by some of the bigger opponents out there. Ronaldo has a much bigger build and has previously claimed to do 1000 press ups every single day.

Headers – Messi isn’t known for having much control when it comes to finishing a goal using his head, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t very good at it. Ronaldo scores a lot more goals with his head than Messi, and his height has a lot to answer for this. He manages to apply a lot of pressure with his head and this can help to get the ball in the back of the net.

There are so many other things that could be compared when it comes to trying to work out who is the best football player, such as who has received the most awards, red cards, penalties and various other stats. All of this and more can be found by clicking here so check it out and share your personal opinion on who your favorite is.
