YAMINA Movie makes U.S. premiere at 34th Pan African Film Festival
The animated film YAMINA by Ghanaian-Canadian filmmaker Gabriel Odartei, celebrated its American premiere at the 34th Annual Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), held in celebration of Black History Month from February 16–22, 2026, at the Culver Theatre and Cinemark Baldwin Hills Crenshaw.
As part of PAFF’s impactful StudentFest program, YAMINA was screened at the Cinemark Theatre in Baldwin Hills, welcoming students and seniors from the community for a special interactive experience with the filmmakers. The program created a meaningful space for dialogue, inspiration, and cultural exchange.
Mr Odartei was present at the festival, engaging directly with young audiences who responded enthusiastically to the film’s themes of courage, identity, and heritage. In addition to the StudentFest screening, YAMINA was also showcased on February 16 and February 22 at The Culver Theater, where Mr Odartei participated in dynamic post-screening Q&A sessions.

Audience members had the opportunity to ask questions about the creative process, the inspiration behind the story, and the importance of African-centered narratives in global cinema.
Produced by Enoch Arhinful and Co-Produced by Kwame Amoateng, YAMINA continues to make waves across the African diaspora. The film has captivated audiences with its cinematic appeal, rich storytelling, and empowering portrayal of its young heroine.
Youth audiences, in particular, have expressed a deep connection to the character of Yamina, seeing reflections of themselves and their potential in her journey.

The story follows a courageous young African girl who must rise above adversity and discover her inner strength to protect her community, embarking on a powerful journey of identity, resilience, and self-belief.
The American premiere at PAFF marks another significant milestone for YAMINA, further solidifying its growing impact as a powerful animated story that celebrates culture, resilience, and representation on the global stage.
