New graphic novel, Asantewaa Awakening celebrates African heroes
For decades, African stories in global media have often been filtered through stereotypes. Modin Comics is challenging that trend with its upcoming graphic novel, “Asantewaa, Awakening”, which places African heroism and spirituality at the centre of a sweeping, mythology-rich narrative.
The story reimagines the legacy of Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary Queen Mother of the Ashanti Empire in Ghana, who led a historic rebellion against British colonial forces. Rather than retelling history verbatim, the novel introduces a young Asante girl, a direct descendant of the queen mother, who is captured into slavery and later awakened by ancestral power.
Her transformation into a liberator drives the narrative, guiding readers through a world shaped by cultural memory, struggle and triumph. Through this heroine, readers confront the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade while also experiencing the spiritual systems, cultural traditions and resilience of the Asante people.
At its core, “Asantewaa, Awakening” is a story about reclaiming power: how pain can become purpose, loss can fuel legacy, and one woman’s destiny can spark a movement.

Jeffrey Abban, founder of Modin Comics, said the project is a response to long-standing misrepresentations of Africa. “The responsibility is on us to tell our story in our own voice, the African voice,” he said.
“I’m deeply passionate about the continent and the chance we have to reshape the narrative that has been told on our behalf.” The novel honours Yaa Asantewaa and the warrior women who defended the Golden Stool, while encouraging African and global readers alike to reconnect with heritage and identity.
Abban envisions the project as the start of a larger creative universe that could expand into animated series, video games and other media. “The prospects are huge,” he said. “This is the groundwork for something expansive; a franchise that grows from the comic outward.”
Beyond its historical and cultural significance, the novel is designed to captivate. Its creators have invested in striking artwork, cinematic storytelling and rigorous research to ensure authenticity. The graphic novel offers a unique blend of education and entertainment, highlighting Africa’s heroes. Men and women of courage, spirit, and destiny whose stories have too often been overlooked.
“Asantewaa, Awakening” invites readers to witness the rise of a hero and in doing so, reflect on African pride and resilience. It is a narrative meant to empower, inspire and celebrate a legacy that has long deserved the spotlight both in Ghana and across the world.
