Asantehemaa Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III’s funeral set for Sep 14

The Asante Kingdom in Ghana will memorialize the life of its late 14th Queen or Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, a sister to the reigning King, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, from September 14-18. The highly revered royal who passed away at 98 on August 7, 2025 will be given final burial rites through a series of deeply traditional funeral ceremonies.

Nana Ama Konadu became Asantehemaa in 2017 after her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, served for eight years, leaving a lasting impact through her dedication to Ashanti culture, wise guidance to the Asantehene, and efforts in advancing maternal health, education, and community welfare.

Her initiatives included supporting Mother-Baby Units at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and founding the Nana Konadu Saviour School.

Her death created a national and international impact, with thousands attending her one-week memorial on August 21. The final funeral rites, known as the ‘Doteyie,’ will take at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Ghana.

To honour her, all funerals, social gatherings, and outdoor events in the Ashanti Kingdom will be paused from September 1 to 18, 2025, in line with Ashanti tradition to focus reverence on a royal’s passing. The rites will begin on September 14, 2025, with Nana Konadu Yiadom III being laid in state at Manhyia Palace.

Close family members, traditional leaders, and selected dignitaries will participate in mourning rituals featuring drumming, dirges, and cultural performances. On September 15, the Ashanti community will pay their respects dressed in traditional black or red mourning attire, reflecting her role as a unifying figure.

The King, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will host dignitaries and leaders for homage-paying ceremonies, including traditional drumming, dancing, and recitations celebrating her legacy, on September 16 and 17.

The rites will conclude on September 18, with a burial service at 1:00 p.m. at the Manhyia Palace, blending Christian and Ashanti rituals. This will be followed by her interment at Bremang’s royal cemetery.
