Egypt and Nigeria have reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed.
Nigeria secured their place with an emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique and will face the winner of the tie between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the next round.
Egypt joined them in the last eight after edging past Benin 3–1 following extra time on January 5 in Agadir. The contest was finely balanced through regulation, with both sides enjoying periods of dominance before Egypt broke the deadlock in extra time.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan said the match underlined the competitiveness of the tournament, noting that there are no easy opponents. He added that careful analysis of each rival allows his team to adapt tactically and deliver performances that meet fans’ expectations.
In the quarter-finals, Egypt played the winner of the match between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, scheduled for January 6 in Marrakech.
Cameroon and host nation Morocco had already booked their places in the quarter-finals earlier in the competition. The Africa Cup of Nations is the continent’s premier international football tournament, organised by CAF and featuring national teams from across Africa.
First staged in 1957, the competition has been held biennially since 1968, with plans to move to a four-year cycle from 2028. The 35th edition of the tournament is taking place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
