Tanzanian Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi has been nominated as the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. The decision was made during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Geneva ahead of the upcoming World Health Assembly.
The nomination follows the untimely passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, who had been elected to the post in 2024. In light of this unexpected loss, Member States of the African Region convened to elect a new leader to guide WHO’s regional health efforts.
Professor Janabi, nominated by Tanzania, emerged as the preferred candidate among four contenders. The other nominees included Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao of Côte d’Ivoire, Dr. Mohamed Lamine Dramé of Guinea, and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa of Togo.
The nomination will be submitted for formal appointment during the 157th session of the WHO Executive Board, scheduled for May 28–29, 2025, in Geneva. If confirmed, Professor Janabi will assume office for a renewable five-year term.
In his remarks following the nomination, Professor Janabi conveyed his gratitude and reaffirmed his dedication to improving health outcomes across the continent.
“I am honoured by your trust and pledge to serve with unwavering commitment,” he said. “Our region faces challenges, from infectious and noncommunicable diseases to the threats posed by climate change and resource limitations. It is only through unity and resilience that we can build a healthier, stronger Africa.”
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus extended his congratulations to Professor Janabi and acknowledged the strength of all the candidates.
“I warmly congratulate Professor Janabi and commend Tanzania on this nomination. I also express my appreciation to Dr. Yao, Dr. Dramé, and Professor Mijiyawa for their dedication and strong campaigns,” said Dr. Tedros. “Professor Janabi steps into this role at a pivotal time, not only for Africa but for WHO globally. His experience will be vital as we strive to make our organization more agile, impactful, and equitable.”
Dr. Tedros also took a moment to recognize Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who has been serving as Acting Regional Director since the conclusion of Dr. Matshidiso Moeti’s tenure.
“Dr. Ihekweazu has provided steady leadership during this transition, and we are grateful for his service,” Dr. Tedros noted. Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Ihekweazu congratulated Professor Janabi and assured him of continued collaboration and support.
